I have been hard at work finishing up my alphabet for my Type Portfolio Class. Almost there!

TYPE PORTFOLIO / Some technicals drawings

TYPE PORTFOLIO / Process

I have recently documented my process for my type portfolio. This week I have been acquiring materials and starting and finishing on three letters.

TYPE PORTFOLIO / Letter V complete

TYPE PORTFOLIO / Letter Y complete

TYPE PORTFOLIO / Preface
The computer has become a great asset for the graphic designer. It enables him to execute projects quickly and efficiently, with a standard which cannot be achieved through his hands.
With that said, working on the computer has never been very much fun and you can’t achieve the quality of and spontaneity of the hand. I have started working on a project which rids me of the computer almost completely. I invite you to follow along as I progress.
THE PROJECT:
Draw the alphabet.
INSPIRATION:
I have always been interested in a kind of a system of lettering that we call graffiti. Suppose you go around and ask people, “Is graffiti a good thing or a bad thing?” You will find hardly a soul that would say it is a good thing. Many people would argue graffiti is a sign of a society in decline, a society spiraling out of control, in a sense that answer is correct. Some graffiti is used as a means of communication amongst fellow gangs, or rival gang members, and is often seen in areas of despair and darkness. As a society we value control and order, private property, and graffiti is a language that most do not understand.
What is to be said about the form? Is it really true that graffiti is only a sign of decline? Where does graffiti come from? Why do people do it? And what does it impose on different individuals?
PROCESS:
-Explore NYC for graffiti.
-Take found graffiti and analyze the form.
-Take the form and translate it onto a grid.
-Take the form and execute a final drawing.
